What Are the Different Types of Codes and How Do They Work?

Transponder Codes

The name implies that a transponder sends out an encoded signal that contains an eight-digit number code whenever it is questioned by air traffic control. This signal is called the SQUAWK code and it is the basis of identification of aircraft on radar screens. It is also used to transmit an exact message to the air traffic control system in an emergency situation or to alert controllers of changes in weather conditions. Squawk codes are commonly used to communicate with ATC in situations where the pilot cannot speak on the radio, and are crucial for safe flying.

Every aircraft is equipped with a transponder that responds to radar interrogation by displaying an identifier code. This allows ATC to identify an aircraft on a busy screen. Transponders have several different modes that differ in how they respond to questions. Mode A only transmits the code, while mode C also includes altitude information. Mode S transponders transmit more specific information, including callsigns and positions. This is useful in airspace that is crowded.

Most aircraft have a tiny beige box that is located under the seat of the pilot. This is the transponder. it is designed to transmit a SQUAWK code when the aircraft is activated by air traffic control. The transponder can be set to the 'ON,' ALT or SBY (standby position) positions.

The 17 numbers of the VIN code are a combination letters and numbers which can be decoded in order to reveal crucial information about your car or truck.
